Updating your Permalinks

First, let me briefly explain what is a Permalink. Basically, every post on your blog has its very own URL, also referred to as a Permalink (a permanent link to a specific post). If you’d like to view your own URL(s) to your blogs, open your blog in a separate page, go to archives and click around, each time looking at each blog’s URL. If you haven’t changed your Permalink structure, by default, Wordpress 2.5 displays your blog links in this format; http://www.yourwebsite.com/?p=123.

Ok, you’re probably thinking “so what?” Well, to have your blog look a little more professional, and to please those search engine spiders out there, you really want to change the format of your Permalinks.

To change your format, go to the Wordpress dashboard, click on the “Settings” tab, and then click on the “Permalinks” tab. It is here where you will customize your Permalinks. You have the “Default” setting, “Day and name” setting, “Month and name” setting, “Numeric” setting, and “Custom Structure” setting.

I am going to be honest with you, I tried changing my settings and it did not work with my server. My hosting account is through GoDaddy. However, I was lucky enough to find a Permalink plugin that works wonderful! The name of the plugin is “Dean’s Permalinks Migration Plugin Version 1.0” and I customized my Permalink to this format; /%category%/%postname%/.

Download Dean’s Permalinks Migration Plugin Version 1.0, follow the download instructions. Go back into your Permalinks, and choose the format you would like for your Permalink. If you would like to use the format I used, copy and paste this: /%category%/%postname%/. Place this format into your “Custom Structure” setting. Make sure you click on the “Save Changes” button on the bottom. Go into “Plugins” and activate Dean’s Permalinks Migration Plugin Version 1.0. Go into “Settings”, click on “Permalinks Migration” and ensure your Permalink structure is set appropriately. Click on “Update Options” and you should be good to go! Test this out by clicking on “Visit Site” at the top of your Wordpress 2.5 window.
